There was a time in Hindi Cine Industries, where no one’s voice was match with the Manoj Kumar in Patriotism Songs and that time, we got a glorious and mountainous voice of only and one, Mahendra Kapoor. He is a singer, who sings more than 2500 songs in his life and not only in Hindi, but in many languages. Even Bhakti songs were also one of the mastery of him. He is a person, who got Fourth Civilian Award of India, Padma Shri by President of India, in 1972 after releasing the most hit movie,”Upkar”.
Mahendra Kapoor born on 4th January, 1934 and died on 27th September, 2008. He was born in Amritsar, Punjab and worked whole life in Mumbai. From starting of his life, he was very much impressed with Best singer, Mohammad Rafi. Even when he starts to sing the songs in Hindi Movies, he was trying to copying the voice and match with Mohammad Rafi. But once, when in one song, both were present, Rafi has asked him that he is having one more mastery of Mountainous voice and no need to copy of any voice. He taken a training Indian classical music by Hussanlal, Jagganath Bua, Ustad Abdul Raheman Khan and Pt.Tulsidas Sharma and created a special style of his own. He won Metro Murphy all India Singing Competition and then after he got a chance to sing a song in V.Shantaram’s movie, Navrang, “Adha hai Chandra ma rat adhi”, in 1958 and that film was super hit film of that time.
Mahendra Kapoor Saheb perform for B.R. Chopra in movies like, Waqt, Gumrah, Dhul Ka Fool, Dhund and Nikah and for Manoj Kumar, his performance was the super hit in UPKAR and Purab Aur Pashchim. After this time, he became a VIBRANT VOICE OF INDIA. At that time, he was most popular voice for Manoj Kumar in Hindi and Dada Kondke in Marathi. He was only singer who sung in multi languages songs like, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati and Punjabi.
Hindi Serial, MAHABHARAT was very well known and main part out of acting of that serial was starting voice of Mahendra Kapoor,”At shri Mahabharata Katha”. His voice was not only for one or two actors but he sung for Amitabh Bachhan, Raj Kapoor, Manoj Kumar, Dharmendra, Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Dev Anand, Bishvajit and Shtrughna Sinha also. He won a National Film Award for Upkar in 1968, for Mere Desh Ki Dharti, Filmfare Awards for Gumrah, Upkar, Humraz, Roti Kapda Aur Makan and Fakira. In last time of his life, he won Life time achievement award by Maharashtra Government and also won Dada Saheb Falke Award in 2008. He also won Lata Mangeshkar Award and Mian Tansen Awards.
He is having three daughters and one son. His son, Rohan Kapoor is also a singer and actor in Bollywood. We are proud of the super singer of Hindi Film Industries, Mahendra Kapoor. We can’t forget him anytime.
